Polluted urban runoff from the stormwater systems that serve Kowloon Tong, Mongkok and Yau Ma Tei districts is a major cause of the deterioration in water quality and associated odour problem at the New Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter and coastal area of West Kowloon.

At present, the stormwater systems that serve the above districts are connected to the Cherry Street box culvert (CSBC) for discharging stormwater into the typhoon shelter. The “Review of West Kowloon and Tsuen Wan Sewerage Master Plans” completed in 2010 revealed that the water flow in CSBC was polluted and imposed impact on the quality of the sea water in West Kowloon, particularly the water in the typhoon shelter. It recommended the construction of a dry weather flow interceptor (DWFI) at the outlet of CSBC to intercept the discharge of polluted urban runoff into the sea during the dry days.
In view of the above, we are constructing a DWFI and a pumping station at the outlet of the CSBC along the seafront of the typhoon shelter to intercept the polluted dry weather flow, and deliver it to Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works for proper treatment and disposal. It is estimated that the DWFI can remove about 70% of the total annual pollution load that enters the typhoon shelter through the CSBC. In addition, the area above the DWFI will be designed with landscaped features, and an about 85-meter long waterfront promenade will be constructed. Both facilities will be opened for public enjoyment.
